| BAY ROBERTS DEMOGRAPHICS The population of the town of Bay Roberts is 5,414, a growth of 3.4% from 2001. POPULATION DENSITY Residents live in an area covering more than 23.92 square km. to give the town a population density of 226.3 people per square kilometer. The low population density offers a great deal of space for both business and residential expansion. [All figures will be updated for 2006 as they become available.] MEDIAN AGE and HOME OWNERSHIP (2001 Census) A number of factors point to a stable work force in Bay Roberts.
The mature, settled work force is looking for employment that will keep them in the region, close to family and friends. (This is reflected in the fact that the population increased in the 2006 census was about 3.4% compared to a provincial decrease of 1.5%.) Young people who are currently working away from home would be interested in returning, if they could find reliable employment. They prefer to raise their children in the security of the Bay Roberts area. They enjoy being near extended family who will assist with looking after children. Housing prices are more reasonable and building lots are much larger and have much more attractive locations, than in urban areas.
COST OF HOUSING The 2001 Census showed that housing in Bay Roberts is less expensive than in the St. John's metropolitan area. The average value of dwellings in the town was $73 704 per dwelling; which is about $4000 lower than the provincial average. As well, the average monthly rent for rented dwellings was $481, whereas the provincial average was $534. MEDIAN FAMILY INCOME The median family yearly income in the town was $37,114, which is about $4 000 less than the provincial median. The average income for for working persons (working full time for the full year) was $34,665. BACCALIEU TRAIL (Bay de Verde Peninsula) DEMOGRAPHICS The population within 30 minutes of Bay Roberts is 38,500. The size of the region (only 2,028 sq. km.) and the looping road system allow workers to easily commute from one part of the region to another. MEDIAN AGE and HOME OWNERSHIP As with the town of Bay Roberts, the median age for these towns and communities is about 35. The population decrease on the Baccalieu Trail in the 2001 census was about 7%, the same as the provincial average and higher than Bay Roberts. The statistics for home ownership have not been compiled regionally; however, the rates in selected towns are similar to Bay Roberts, or even higher in smaller towns. (Carbonear - 82%, Spaniard's Bay - 91%, Upper Island Cove - 97%, Heart's Content - 92%) Similar to Bay Roberts, the region as a whole has a mature, stable work force, many of whom own their homes and have a strong attachment to the region where they have extended families and friends. SPECIALIZED TRAINING Bay Roberts has a training facility for commercial drivers and heavy equipment operators, the Canadian Training Institute. In addition, it is about 15 minutes from two post secondary training institutions which serve the needs of the Baccalieu Trail region: the College of the North Atlantic Carbonear Campus which is publicly owned and operated, and Keyin College which is privately owned and operated. The College of the North Atlantic, as a public educational institution has a mandate to develop courses to meet the need of business and industry in the region. In the past it has designed courses for fish harvesters and for commercial sewing for local industries. The town is only about one hour from Memorial University, which is the largest university in Atlantic Canada. The P. J. Gardiner Institute for Enterprise and Entrepreneurship (PJG) was the first centre of small business support to be established within a Canadian university. The Institute has been supporting business initiatives by providing business coaching, small business skills training, supportive entrepreneurial research, and through the establishment of numerous outreach services to rural business in Newfoundland and Labrador for the past 25 years.The Centre for International Business Studies (CIBS) helps Newfoundland businesses enter the international marketplace and facilitates international opportunities for students and faculty. |
