Chomper's Tips

We are charged 8 cents for recyclable items at purchase. You take recyclable items to the Green Depot in Coley's Point and get 5 cents back or you can donate them to a community group.

Two community groups that are registered with the Green Depot are: Coley's Point Primary School and the Bay Roberts Heritage Society.

Keep a container like a beef bucket in your trunk to collect those bottles and tins on the ground or near where you park etc. You can help clean up the environment, while gaining funds for yourself or for community organizations.

Household Hazardous Waste (HHW)

Since 1998, MMSB has organized HHW days in a number of communities in Newfoundland and Labrador where residents can drop off their HHWs for recycling and safe disposal. This program plays an important role in reducing the amount of hazardous wastes going to waste disposal sites.

The town of Bay Roberts has a Household Hazardous Waste Day each year.

As part of the HHW program, MMSB has produced municipal and residential HHW guides to assist communities in developing their own programs and provide residents with information about the safe usage and disposal of household hazardous wastes.

Cleaning Beverage Containers

Is it really necessary to wash containers before putting them in the recycling bin? A certain level of cleanliness is obviously called for out of respect for the people who work at the sortation centre.

Tire Recycling

Consumers can leave their used tires, at no cost, with a tire retailer upon the purchase of new tires. However, they can also be returned to a tire retailer at a later date in manageable quantities during the retailer's normal business hours.[Please note that used tires are NOT ACCEPTED at any location other than a tire retail outlet or as otherwise designated by MMSB.]

Cleaning Tires

Used tires must be in whole form, free of mud or debris, and must have their rims removed prior to disposal at a retailer.

Oil Recycling

In Newfoundland and Labrador you can return used lubricating, crankcase, and gear oil, and transmission fluid. Consumers can bring their used oil to an oil retailer, free of charge.

The Oil Recycling Program ensures proper disposal of used oil, as well as recycling and reuse of the product. Once collected, lubricating oil can be recycled and reprocessed for use again as a lubricant or fuel.
