Mayor Wood’s Winter Message

Well 2018 is now in the history books and 2019 is here! There is good reason to think (and hope) that it will be equally as good a year for the Town of Bay Roberts as 2018!

December past, Council presented its Budget for 2019. It was a balanced budget ($7.6M) designed to provide the necessary core services that residents are asking for and deserve. It was also a Budget that will see again major investments in infrastructureand recreation as we prepare for the 2020 NL Summer Games. Some highlights include;

– No changes to tax rates for both property and business owners along with no increase in Water & Sewer Taxes.
– The continuation of the 10% discount for early payment for seniors and also the continuation of our low income senior payment plan.
– The budget will see funding provided to complete the planned road infrastructure project on Goose Pond Hill. In addition, road work and storm water projects for Pepper’s Road, Station Road & Bishop’s Road will be completed.
– Monies will be provided to once again support our Fire Department purchase additional equipment, do some much needed maintenance at the Fire Hall and for training.
– The Town will also make a number of purchases to upgrade our Public Works Department. These include the purchasing of a new loader, a new side loading garbage truck and sidewalk plow with accessories. In addition, monies have been allocated to upgrade some of our Lift-Stations.
– The Budget does not include any new borrowing. However, it has to be stressed – in order for the Town to functionproperly – it is necessary for residents to pay their taxes and for the Town to collect them. The Town depends upon it and it asks that both residents and businesses make the payment of taxes a priority.

Once again, I would also like to remind residents about our Recycling Program. I urge everyone to Reduce, Reuse & Participate so as this project continues to grow bigger and better – remember Recycling helps our environment in a very big wayand is also more economical for taxpayers!

There will undoubtedly be a lot of activities ongoing this Winter Season both in Bay Roberts and the surrounding area. I encourage everyone to get out and about and enjoy what the season has to offer. Get involved – take in as many of these events as possible in order to show your support. Lastly, to say the least about the weather in Newfoundland & Labrador, it is very unpredictable. In Winter, it is even more so. Thus, I ask everyone to stay prepared for the snow, ice and colder temperatures that will surely come this season. Most importantly – drive safely! Our Works Department is always out there during this time of year doing their very best to maintain safe driving conditions for all! Thanking everyone in advance for their support and cooperation.
