Mayor Philip Wood – Volunteer Week – April 23–29th
Volunteer Week has been set this year in NL to be April 23–29th. This year’s theme is “volunteering shapes lives”. The theme is meant to highlight the many ways in which volunteering shapes our lives and our communities.
Volunteer Week is an opportunity for us to applaud the great spirit of volunteering in our community. Bay Roberts is certainly very fortunate to have so many people who freely give their time. They have certainly helped to shape our community and helped to make it a better place to live and to visit. Volunteers are a very precious resource. Without them, many of our churches, community groups and clubs, sports teams and charitable and special events would not be able to prosper, or even exist, as they do today.
It is important for us all to celebrate and recognize all those who volunteer in our community and say – THANK YOU!!! To all those who play an active role in our Town, please continue to do so. Your efforts are very much appreciated. To those who would like to be more active and involved, please reach out. I encourage you to do so. There are many groups and organizations that can certainly use your help. Every volunteer makes a real difference!
I’ll end my message by quoting LT. Colonel J.P. O’Driscoll #2398, a former Commanding Officer of the Royal Newfoundland Regiment, when in 1949 speaking of those who were lost at the Battle of Beaumont-Hamel on July 1st, 1916 he said;
